Once you’ve found that perfect home, you want the space to feel like you. Nothing compares to the feeling like your home is actually YOURS. How can you get that feeling? Here are a few tips to help you make the space more of your own:

1) Paint!

Paint has always been and always will be one of the cheapest and easiest ways to update a space. Changing the color or adding color can completely transform a space. Lightening up the current color can make a room feel larger; adding a bold accent color will change the feel of the room.

2) Use plants

A little green can make your space feel better. Greenery brings beauty, texture, and good energy into a home. Even if you don’t know much about the care and maintenance of plants, taking care of real flowers and plants brings a certain amount of relaxation and pride into your everyday routine as you take care of them.

3) Mix it Up

If your house needs an updated look, take some tips below:

  • Wood Try to stay away from the furniture store showroom style. Don’t be afraid to use different wood tones in the same space. Different tones make a space feel like things weren’t purchased in one trip.
  • Metals A little metal goes a long way. If you’re feeling flashy, use something large like an end table. Mixing a bit of brass and silver is completely fine.
  • Glass Using glass objects is a great way to fill space without creating too much visual weight. Mirrors on the wall or a glass vase with flowers glass base are easy ways to use this material.
  • Textiles Bringing textiles into a room adds some definite character. Add some rugs to your rooms, add a throw to the end of your bed, hang curtains, add a mix of pillows to the sofa. All of these things will add depth and interest to your space.

4) Decorate Your Walls

Pictures and art on the walls are a great way to bring things you love into your home. Whether it is pictures of your children and family, treasured pieces of art, or inexpensive trinkets collected over the years, displaying them gives personality to the space. Opt for a mixture of these items to create a unique and interesting look.

5) Update Flooring

Flooring is a great way to update the home. Be sure to select a timeless, durable option that is gorgeous as well. Flooring is definitely more of an investment of time and money, but if you find something that you love and that will last, you are giving your home an update that will last for years to come.

6) Consolidate

Once the unpacking has started, continue to work to move boxes out of your home. Once you have a smaller amount of boxes, try to move them to one room so that you can enjoy your other spaces clutter-free. Just don’t forget about that room with the boxes!!

7) Guests

Invite family and friends over! Once you’ve settled in, have the family over, or a group of friends. Your home doesn’t have to look perfect yet—sharing your new space with loved ones will make it feel more like home than anything else.
